How can we help?

Answers to common questions about RecallForge: getting started, creating cards, studying, and keeping your data private.

Getting Started4

What is RecallForge?

RecallForge is a flashcard and spaced repetition app built specifically for professionals studying for industry certifications — PMP, AWS, CISSP, CPA, and others. It combines AI-powered flashcard creation with a smart review scheduler so you retain what you study, not just what you reviewed the night before.

Do I need an account to use RecallForge?

No. RecallForge works entirely on your device with no account or sign-in required. Your study data stays local.

What certifications does RecallForge support?

RecallForge works for any certification you are preparing for. When you first launch the app, you name your own certification track. You can add as many tracks as you need from the Library tab.

How is RecallForge different from generic flashcard apps?

Three things set it apart: (1) it uses FSRS-5, the most accurate spaced repetition algorithm available, to schedule reviews at exactly the right time; (2) it generates flashcards from your own source material using AI rather than requiring you to create every card manually; and (3) its organization mirrors how professional certification exams are structured — by domain and topic area.

Organization: Tracks, Decks, and Card Sets6

What is a Track?

A Track represents one certification you are preparing for — for example, "AWS Solutions Architect Associate" or "PMP." Everything in RecallForge lives inside a Track.

What is a Domain Deck?

A Domain Deck is a subdivision within a Track that maps to an exam domain or knowledge area. For example, a PMP track might have decks for "Project Integration," "Risk Management," and "Stakeholder Engagement." Organizing cards this way lets you see your readiness per domain, just as the exam measures you.

What is a Card Set?

A Card Set is an optional grouping inside a deck for a specific topic or session — for example, "Week 3 Notes" or "Chapter 5 — Procurement." Card Sets help you organize cards that came from the same source material.

How do I create a Track?

Go to the Library tab → tap + → New Track. Enter the certification name and choose a category.

How do I add a Deck to a Track?

Open a Track from the Library → tap + → New Domain Deck.

Can I have multiple Tracks at the same time?

Yes. You can prepare for multiple certifications simultaneously. Each Track is independent with its own decks, cards, and readiness score.

Creating Flashcards16

How do I create cards manually?

Open any Deck → tap + → New Card. Enter the front (question) and back (answer). Tap Save.

What is AI Generate?

AI Generate is the fastest way to create cards. You provide study material — pasted text, a PDF, or content from a web page — and the AI produces up to 10 focused flashcards from it in seconds. Each generation uses one AI call.

What is Photo + OCR?

Photo + OCR lets you take a photo of printed material — a textbook page, whiteboard, or printed study guide — and extract the text on-device using Apple's Vision framework (no AI call used for extraction). You can then review the extracted text and generate cards from it with one AI call.

How many free AI calls do I get?

RecallForge includes 10 complimentary AI generation calls. Each call can produce up to 10 cards from your source material.

What counts as one AI call?

Any single generation — whether from text, PDF, or photo OCR — counts as one call, regardless of how many cards are returned.

What is the word limit for AI generation?

Source material must be under 4,000 words per generation. If your content is longer, split it into sections and generate separately, one section per call.

Can I generate cards from a PDF?

Yes. In the Quick Add tab → AI Generate → switch to the PDF tab → tap to select a PDF file. Text is extracted on-device from the PDF, then you use one AI call to generate cards. Password-protected or scanned-image PDFs are not supported — for scanned PDFs, use Photo + OCR instead.

Can I generate cards from a web page?

RecallForge cannot fetch web pages directly, but you can paste the text content from any page into the Text input in AI Generate. The URL tab is provided as a label reminder — paste the content, not the URL itself.

How do I use the Share Extension?

In Safari or any app, select text or use the Share button → tap RecallForge in the share sheet. The selected content opens directly in AI Generate with the text pre-filled, ready for card generation.

Can I edit AI-generated cards before saving them?

Yes. After generation, every card goes into an AI Review Queue where you can edit the front and back of each card, delete cards you don't want, and confirm the destination deck before saving anything.

Does the 10-call limit restrict how many cards or decks I can create?

Not at all. The 10 AI call limit only applies to in-app AI generation. You can create unlimited Tracks, Domain Decks, Card Sets, and individual flashcards manually — there is no cap on any of them.

Can I create cards outside the app and import them?

Yes. RecallForge supports importing flashcards from a tab-separated (.tsv) file. Each row in the file represents one card, with the front (question) in the first column and the back (answer) in the second column. You can create this file in any spreadsheet app — Numbers, Excel, or Google Sheets — and import it directly into any Deck.

What is the .tsv format and how do I create one?

A .tsv file is a plain text file where columns are separated by a tab character. To create one:

  1. Open Numbers, Excel, or Google Sheets
  2. Put your questions in column A and answers in column B — one card per row, no header row needed
  3. Export or save as Tab Separated Values (.tsv)
Can I use ChatGPT, Claude, or other AI tools to generate my .tsv file?

Absolutely — and this is a great way to get unlimited AI-generated cards with no in-app call limit. Paste your study material into any AI tool and ask it to produce a two-column tab-separated list of question-and-answer flashcards. Copy the output into a spreadsheet, save as .tsv, and import into RecallForge. You get the full power of AI card generation with no restrictions.

How do I import a .tsv file into RecallForge?

Go to Quick Add tab → Import from File → select your .tsv file → choose the destination Track and Deck → tap Import. Your cards are added immediately and scheduled for review.

Is there a limit on how many cards I can import at once?

There is no hard limit on import size. Very large imports (thousands of cards) may take a moment to process. Once imported, all cards are available for study and begin accumulating their FSRS-5 review schedule as you work through them.

Studying and Reviews6

How does spaced repetition work?

After you review a card, you rate how well you knew it: Again, Hard, Good, or Easy. RecallForge uses the FSRS-5 algorithm to calculate when you should see that card again. Cards you rate Easy reappear much later. Cards you rate Again come back the same day. Over time the schedule becomes personalized to your actual memory.

What is the Today tab?

The Today tab is your daily study hub. It shows how many cards are due for review today across all your tracks and decks. Tap Start Review to begin a session.

What do the study session ratings mean?
  • Again — you didn't remember. The card resets and will appear again very soon.
  • Hard — you remembered but with difficulty. The next interval increases slightly.
  • Good — you remembered comfortably. The card follows its normal schedule.
  • Easy — you knew it instantly. The next interval extends significantly.
How long is a typical study session?

Sessions are as long as your due cards require. RecallForge shows your progress through the session (e.g., "12 of 30") and a completion screen when you finish.

Can I study a specific deck rather than everything due today?

Yes. Open any Deck from the Library → tap Study This Deck to review only cards in that deck.

What if I have no cards due today?

The Today tab will tell you that you're caught up and show when your next review is scheduled.

Readiness Score3

What is the Readiness Score?

The Readiness Score is a percentage that reflects how well you know your material across a Deck or Track, based on your review history and FSRS-5 stability estimates. A score of 100% means all your cards are well-retained. New cards with no review history count against the score.

How do I improve my Readiness Score?

Complete your daily reviews consistently. Rating cards Good or Easy increases the score faster than rating Again or Hard. Adding new cards temporarily reduces the score until those cards have been reviewed.

Where do I see my Readiness Score?

Each Deck and Track shows its readiness score in the Library. The Progress tab gives an overview across all your study material.

Security and Privacy5

Does RecallForge collect any of my data?

No personal data is collected or stored by RecallForge. All study content, cards, and review history remain on your device.

Is my study content sent to the internet?

Only when you use AI card generation. The text you submit for generation is sent to OpenAI's API to produce flashcards. This is the only outbound data transfer. Photos are processed entirely on-device using Apple's Vision framework.

What is the PIN / Face ID lock?

You can set a PIN during onboarding or from Settings. Once set, RecallForge locks automatically when you leave the app and requires PIN or Face ID to re-enter. This keeps your study content private if someone else picks up your device.

How do I change or remove my PIN?

Go to Settings → App Lock to change or disable your PIN.

What happens if I delete and reinstall the app?

Your study data (cards, decks, tracks, review history) is stored on-device using SwiftData and will be lost if the app is deleted. Your PIN is cleared on reinstall so you can set a new one.

Progress and Statistics2

Where can I see my overall study progress?

The Progress tab shows your study statistics across all tracks: total cards, cards reviewed, streak, readiness by deck, and recent session history.

Does RecallForge support streaks?

Yes. The Progress tab tracks your consecutive days of completing at least one review session.

Widget1

Does RecallForge have a home screen widget?

Yes. Long-press your home screen → tap + → search for RecallForge to add the widget. It shows how many cards are due for review today so you can stay on schedule at a glance.

Troubleshooting5

AI generation returned no cards — what do I do?

This usually means the source text was too short, too sparse, or written in a way the AI couldn't extract clear question-answer pairs from. Try providing more structured content — definitions, process steps, rules, or principles — and generate again.

The app says I have no AI calls remaining.

You have used all 10 complimentary calls included with the app. Additional AI generation is on the roadmap for a future update.

My cards aren't appearing in Today's review.

Cards only appear in Today's review when they are due based on their FSRS-5 schedule. Newly created cards that have never been studied will appear on their first scheduled review day — typically the same day or the following day. You can also study any deck directly from the Library without waiting for the scheduled date.

I lost my study data after reinstalling.

Study data is stored locally on your device and is not backed up to iCloud in the current version. Deleting the app permanently removes all data. Cloud backup is planned for a future release.

Face ID isn't working.

Make sure RecallForge has Face ID permission enabled in iPhone Settings→ RecallForge→ Face ID. You can always use your PIN as a fallback.
